Chrome yellow was first synthesized in the early 1800s. French chemist Louis Nicolas Vauquelin, while studying the mineral crocoite (a natural form of lead chromate), discovered chromium, which led to the creation of chrome yellow. It quickly became popular among artists and designers for its bright, sunny hue.
The production process involves mixing lead (II) salts, with a source of chromate, like an alkali chromate or dichromate solution. The resulting pigment precipitates as a fine solid. The hue of chrome yellow can vary from primrose yellow to orange, determined by the particle size, which is influenced by the precipitation conditions. Lighter shades often contain lead sulfate or other insoluble lead salts, while middle hues are neutral lead chromate, and orange chromes are basic lead chromate.
