Talc powder, a soft, fine grained powder, is sourced from the mineral talc. Talc is a hydrous magnesium silicate mineral. It forms through the metamorphism of magnesium - rich rocks, such as serpentinites and dolomites. This occurs when these rocks are subjected to high pressure and temperature conditions, often in the presence of hydrothermal fluids.
The extraction process starts with mining. Talc can be mined through both open pit and underground methods. Once the raw talc ore is extracted, it undergoes several processing steps. First, it is crushed to reduce the size of the ore lumps. Then, it is ground into a fine powder using mills, such as ball mills or Raymond mills. After grinding, the powder may go through purification processes. This can involve techniques like magnetic separation to remove iron - bearing impurities, and flotation to separate talc from other associated minerals.
