Precipitated barium sulfate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula BaSO4. It is mainly sourced through chemical synthesis rather than direct mining like natural barite.
The production process begins with barium - containing raw materials, it is first dissolved in water to form a barium ion rich solution. Then, a sulfuric acid based precipitating agent, such as sulfuric acid (H2SO4) or sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), is added. A chemical reaction occurs, where barium ions combine with sulfate ions, resulting in the precipitation of barium sulfate. For barium carbonate, it reacts with sulfuric acid to produce barium sulfate, carbon dioxide, and water.
After precipitation, the resulting barium sulfate particles are separated from the solution, typically through filtration.
Subsequently, the solid is washed to remove impurities and then dried to obtain the final precipitated barium sulfate powder. This synthetic method allows for precise control over the particle size, shape, and purity of the product.
