Lithopone, a synthetic white pigment, originates from a chemical reaction between barium sulfide and zinc sulfate , forming a 30% zinc sulfide (ZnS) and 70% barium sulfate composite. The production process begins with reducing barite using coal or coke at high temperatures in a rotary kiln to generate BaS. This BaS solution then undergoes a double decomposition reaction with ZnSO4, yielding a white lithopone precipitate. The precipitate is filtered, washed, dried, and calcined to enhance its brightness (90-95% ISO) and opacity.
